Editorial services that help your content shine

An initial review to look at content, structure and tone. Also called an editorial report, it is ideal if you're not sure your text is ready for a developmental or copy edit. Rather than make edits to a text that may need significant changes, I write a comprehensive report highlighting strengths and weaknesses, and provide recommendations on changes to make to improve the text. Manuscript reviews usually take place when a first draft is ready. However, I also work with authors before drafting to discuss ideas for document structure.

Document layout

I provide a document layout service in Microsoft Word called "camera ready copy". This service often involves following the specific instructions of an organisation or publisher, but I also work with authors to develop a bespoke layout. It is perfect for documents that will be turned into PDFs and made available online.

Developmental editing

A thorough review and edit that looks at the content, structure, tone and flow of the text. Significant changes may be made during this stage so it is essential that enough time is allowed for this and the subsequent stages of copy editing and proofreading.

Proofreading

A last chance to catch errors, proofreading takes place after a document has been edited and formatted/typeset. When proofreading I am looking to ensure consistency and correct mistakes. I will also look at layout and typography. A proofreader should always be different to the person who has edited your work as they will have a fresh perspective that enables them to catch any remaining errors.

Copy editing

A careful review at the sentence/paragraph level to correct errors, improve flow and check consistency. This stage also includes a thorough review and edit of any references. Copy-editing takes place in MS Word once a final draft of the document is ready. I carefully read each line of the document to correct errors and suggest improvements to ensure clarity and consistency, and that key messages are effectively conveyed.

Copywriting

Trained in journalism, I can help individual authors and organisations write content for blogs, websites, newsletters, and more. We will have a good chat about exactly what you want to achieve from your content and target your text accordingly.
